A brief insight into
Their hard work towards Cancer Research and how you can help play your part in beating Cancer.
In 2008, the John & Lucille Van Geest Foundation donated £7.65m to support the work of the Cancer Research team at NTU. The money was used to build and support the purpose-built John Van Geest Cancer Research Centre. Here the scientists are working to develop vaccines against Breast and Prostate Cancer.
"The team and I are extremely fortunate to have been given the opportunity to take our work into the future this way."
Professor Robert Rees,
Direct of the John Van Geest Cancer Research Centre.
By donating to the Alumni Association Fund. We need all the help we can get in ensuring that the work at the John Van Geest Cancer Research Centre can continue.
Unlike most charities, the money you donate goes straight to the research. We don't take our slice of the cake.
The equipment needed is not as expensive as you'd imagine and donations will help towards all manner of vital equipment.
Allows Scientists to grow further cells from sample cells. This requires a nutrient solution which contains everything that the cells need to grow.
A single gift of £10 will enable a gene of interest to be sequenced, so the scientists have a greater understanding of the makeup of that gene.
A donation of £5 per month will enable the scientists to artificially synthesise a protein which is linked to cancer in some way.
If the scientists working in the centre indentify a possible future route of research, they are able to order cancer cells from a tissue bank with the specific attributes they are interested in researching to test their results.
A gift of £10 per month will enable the scientists to purchase 4 specific reagent markers, which will save a great deal of time in identifying which cells are of interest.
There are around 56,000 genes present in a cancer cell, only some of which are active. Your gift of £15 per month would enable us to fully map all of the genes within a cell which show a particular response to cancer.
A donation of £20 per month will enable the centre to purchase an additional microscope for examining cells.
It really is that simple to help find a cure for Cancer.
Cancer is a real threat. But with your generosity, we are able to beat cancer, one step at a time.
