Week 3: On community

I guess this must be the place

A short week-notes for this week, as it's been packed up in boxes to be moved on Monday.

This week marks 2 years since we received our visa to live in The Netherlands. With that, I'm reflecting on the value of community.

Community comes in all forms:

  • The neighbours who collectively decide to plant a tree in their communal patch of grass, or fix paving stones when the council have neglected them for too long.

  • The ask to cat-sit, or offer to borrow a ladder

  • The togetherness of trying something new for the first time

  • Meeting people from all parts of the world (and Hackney) through a collective love of sport

I sound like I'm straying into some "love thy neighbour" territory here, what stands out to me in all the above it how the idea of 'community' is something that's fostered — it starts with a good gesture, or an 'offer' from one side.

Over time, this has the potential to create a virtuous cycle. Building bonds of trust, and making a meaningful difference to the part of the world in front you.

With this in mind, you can create community wherever you are — just start by making an offer — even if that's a simple 'hello'.
